Dress Up. Play Hard. Stand Out.

Words by Lisa A. Beach | Photo by Jessica Friend

With a company slogan of “Dress Up, Play Hard, Stand Out!,” mompreneur Tracey Currey of Winter Park is a force in giving back to the community and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Currey’s company, PonyTail Bows, caters to the equestrian market (with expansion plans in the works), providing handcrafted bows to horse riders of all ages.

Tapping into her love of horses, Currey started the company in 2013 when a friend asked her to create a set of hair bows for her daughter to wear in a horse show. Currey’s daughters, Anna (9) and Ella (12), also compete, so she understood the dilemma of finding durable, classic bows to complement a rider’s outfit. Happy to help, Currey handcrafted a precision-made, high-quality bow that not only wowed her friend, but also caught the attention of other equestrians. Soon, the requests poured in. After researching the market, Currey developed a proprietary method of hand-made bow craftsmanship that now sets the gold standard.

While her friend’s request jumpstarted the bow-making idea, Currey’s inspiration to launch a business hits closer to home.

“I began riding at age five and competing at nine,” says Currey. “When I got my horse Z, no one believed we could compete because Z suffered from a movement illness. I refused to listen to the naysayers! I had faith that we could work hard and overcome the odds. We ended up competing at the advanced level!”

She lost Z to cancer in 2014, but he still serves as her inspiration today. “I wanted to honor Z’s journey through the success of PonyTail Bows, and I wanted to build a company that would serve others.”

Currey makes good on her promise, as PonyTail Bows generously gives back. Through the sale of specialty bows, the company raises funds locally for breast cancer awareness, child abuse awareness and pediatric cancer. Nationally, PonyTail Bows gives a portion of equestrian bow sales to the USHJA Foundation, the charitable arm of the U.S. Equestrian Federation. Currey also launched the Blue Ribbon Project, a leadership program that connects girls from across the country and focuses on sportsmanship, philanthropy and integrity.

“Joining with these causes brought me into alignment with our purpose,” points out Currey. “I wanted to build a company based on inspiration and service but do it in a high-end, beautiful way.”

As she grows her company (in both profit and service), Currey deals with the challenges of juggling her work and family life. “I’m a wife first, a parent second and a business owner third. It’s a balance,” she says. “But the coolest thing is my girls have watched me grow. They’ve seen it’s not always easy. Our family motto is: Never give up!”

PonyTail Bows recently launched new product lines, including athletic bows that can be customized with players’ names, numbers, and positions — perfect for girls who want to dress up, play hard and stand out.

You can find PonyTail Bows locally at Chloe Lane Boutique in Winter Park, The Tack Boutique in Winter Garden and Stockman’s Harness and Saddle Shop in Orlando.

PonyTail Bows sells three specialty “cause bows” to raise funds for the following local charities:

  1. Pink Out Winter Park, which benefits the Winter Park Memorial Hospital Mammography Scholarship Fund
  2. Howard Phillips Center for Children & Families, which benefits Central Florida’s at-risk children and their families
  3. Pediatric Runway to Hope, which benefits children with cancer and their families

Braided Fauxhawk

BraidedFauxhawk-header

Do your kiddo’s hair up super cool in this fun, braided fauxhawk.

Words and photos by Tanya Dombrowski

If your girl is addicted to Cute Girls Hairstyles on YouTube (look it up; it’s mom-approved), then she’ll love this adorable braided fauxhawk hairstyle. Think of it as rocker chic, plus it’s easy to do (seriously) and perfect for all ages.

Here is what you’ll need:

  • Small elastic hair ties
  • A rattail comb
  • Bobby pins
  • Hair gel
  • Hair spray

How to do the “do”:

Steps

  1. Brush hair to remove any tangles.
  2. Lightly spray hair with water to make the hair easier to control.
  3. Section the hair into three parts, and tie each section as you go:
    • At the crown (top of the hair).
    • At the midsection.
    • At the nape (lower back of the hair).
  4. Braid each section, and tie.
  5. Once each section is braided, loosely tug on each braid, just enough to widen the braid (known as pancaking). Be careful not to tug too hard because then the braid will come apart.
  6. Wrap each section into a circle along the base of the strand.
  7. Secure with bobby pins.
  8. Use the gel or hair spray to tame the flyaway hair.

You can customize this hairstyle by adding ribbons, flowers, bows or hair chalk to the braids. Also, you can twist each section, then pin at the top to add pizzazz. Happy fauxhawking!

An American In Paris

Celebrate life with these fabulous Paris-inspired fashions

Photos by Carlos Amoedo | Wardrobe and prop styling by Consider Any Thing Done, LLC
Models from Kids Beating Cancer | Shot in studio at Lightbox Orlando

Kids Beating Cancer was founded by local mom Margaret Guedes in 1992, in memory of her son John Robert Voight. This Orlando-based charity funds life-saving programs and provides life-enhancing resources to support the financial and emotional well-being of children and their families during the treatment and recovery process. By the charity providing pre-transplant testing and donor identification, any child can have access to marrow or stem cell transplantation. This testing is provided at no cost at the Kids Beating Cancer Pediatric Transplant Center, which is located at Florida Hospital for Children.

Kids Beating Cancer’s Hats and Heroes Ball is going Parisian in unparalleled luxury on October 3 at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando with the theme “An American in Paris.” Michael Andrew and his orchestra will fill the room with Gershwin’s music as guests watch a special American in Paris performance of the Orlando Ballet. With your ticket purchase, you can be a part of the cure while enjoying this wonderful evening filled with sounds of Paris, French food and exquisite ballet!

We Heart Cookie Johnson!

Cj by Cookie Johnson for Neiman Marcus

We heart Cookie Johnson! Well, really we heart CJ by Cookie Johnson, the hottest new jeans made for women with curves. We’re not talking plus size ladies, we’re talking size 2 – 18 real bodies with real curves. Oh, and did we fail to mention that Oprah has just announced that these jeans are her new fave? We recently sat down with the designer herself, at Neiman Marcus to get the skinny on her bootylicious jeans.

Like most women entrepreneurs, Cookie Johnson solved one her biggest problems by starting her own business, CJ by Cookie Johnson. Cookie could not find a pair of jeans that fit her body type. You would think a tall, athletic women living in LA could find a good pair of jeans. Nope – not a pair out there – or anywhere for that matter! Cookie joined forces with fabric guru Michael Glasser (creator of luxe jean lines: Seven for All Mankind, Citizens for Humanity and Rich & Skinny), chose a premium stretch fabric and used her own body as a proto-type. CJ by Cookie Johnson currently has six different styles on the market, which include the “boyfriend,” the “straight leg” and, our favorite, the “high-waisted trouser.” In addition to being uber-chic and stylish, this new line of jeans has amazing butt coverage. No more showing off your goods when you bend over to pick up your little ones. Don’t be confused; this isn’t a “mom jean,” just designed by one. Check out CJ by Cookie Johnson at Neiman Marcus at The Mall at Millenia, or online at www.neimanmarcus.com.

Boho Cool

The term “Bohemian” (sometimes shortened to “boho”) is applied to people who live unconventional, artistic lives. The original “Bohemians” were travelers or refugees from central Europe (hence, the French word bohémien, for “gypsy”).

Fashion Fix

5 Essential style solutions for the modern mom on the run.

Mom On The Run

1. The Go-To Denim
A staple in any wardrobe, denim is known for its variety of washes, fits and embellishments. We as moms know that sometimes the more choices we have the more time it takes us away from the task at hand. I  encourage you to find yourself an MVP pair that will last through any season regardless of occasion. I am always running around in my dark-blue cropped J Brand denim. I wore them through my last pregnancy as long as I could, even turning in the closure until I couldn’t fit past the zipper. They were my go-to pair that I could wear with anything from day to night, it was always just a matter of accessorizing. A good place to begin your search is with PAIGE DENIM. I suggest a dark blue wash with a fit that is most flattering to your frame. If you need extra assistance finding what works best for your body type you can check out their interactive Fit Guide on their website.

2. The Oversize Bag
Bigger is better, especially when you have all of the unexpected instances that come along with parenthood.  Added babies translates to added organization so ditch the diaper bag and opt for more condensed casing for your tiny tots tools that you can easily slip into your oversized slouchy bag or tote. TANO has a great selection of conservatively priced handbags in variety of candy-licious colors.

3. The Platform Shoe
The platform has given us cause to maintain our sex appeal during the daytime even with your children in tow. Whether you choose a platform wedge or heel, the added height lengthens your look without sacrificing comfort. There is a wide assortment to choose from since every known shoe designer has grasped the full potential of the platform. For those of us who remain recession-conscious, I recommend NINE WEST for modern interpretations of the platform with great value.

4. The Dress
Have a power-packed day with multiple meetings and functions? With the right dress you can easily transition your look by simply packing on extra accessories.  Never has it been so easy to create so many different looks with one piece. The key to becoming a fashion chameleon is layering. You can easily take a simple tailored dress to new heights with statement jewelry and an added cardigan or lightweight jacket. Adding a belt to cinch the look goes great with a pair of platform heels. For those of you who need a better visual check out www.marieclaire.com/fashion/trends/articles/spring-dresses

5. The Jacket
A fitted cropped short-sleeve jacket is an instant upgrade. It adds structure to your look so whether or not your kids take you seriously, someone will.
