Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party 2017

Words by Heather Reneau

Halloween is my favorite holiday by far, and my whole family is right there with me — we’re all huge Halloween fans! We look for any way we can to extend the celebration for the whole season; October 31st just isn’t long enough for us to pack in all of our Halloween shenanigans.

The first Halloween event that makes us drag the costumes out of the attic in early (and hot) September is Disney’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. This special ticketed event technically begins in late August, but we usually go in early to mid-September to get a little closer to the Halloween season while still taking advantage of super short lines (if any at all).

5 Reasons We Love Disney’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party:

  1. It’s an evening event, so Not-So-Scary is also Not-So-Sweaty.
  2. If you go in August or September, the lines for rides are super short.
  3. In my opinion, Boo to You is the best Disney parade of the year.
  4. It’s fun to see the guests dressed up in costume. Some adults really get into it.
  5. The Monstrous Scream-O-Ween Ball (DJ dance party) in Tomorrowland is an absolute blast!

I love to see how Disney pushes the scariness just enough to give it a little edge. For example, the Boo to You parade commences with the Headless Horseman — that’s right, a headless man on a horse literally rides through the parade route to kick off the show. Amazing! Another super creative part of the parade is the gravediggers who drag their shovels across the ground to create some serious sparks.

The downside is that not everything is open. You won’t be eating at Be Our Guest or taking the Jungle Cruise. But you’ll be so busy getting through your favorite rides so quickly, you won’t even miss those attractions. Each year, we find ourselves starting at Adventureland and working our way around the park to hit these rides: Magic Carpets of Aladdin, Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, It’s a Small World, Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Mad Tea Party, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, and Space Mountain. Plus, we make sure to save time for the parade and the dance party!

Disney’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is hands-down this Florida native’s favorite way to experience the Magic Kingdom. I’m telling ya, you’ll be amazed at how much fun you and your own little monsters will be able to pack into five hours without the long lines.

Select nights from August 25 through November 1, 7 p.m.–Midnight

PLAY Tips:

  • You can enter as early as 4 p.m.
  • The busiest night is October 31st. I’m guessing the lines are probably long, and that night usually sells out fast.
  • Wear family costumes to make it more fun.
  • They provide candy bags, so that’s one less thing you need to schlep.
  • If you’re looking for a complete guide to this special event, this one is the best I’ve found so far.
  • Purchase your tickets here. There’s dynamic pricing so the earlier you go the cheaper the price.

Here’s a video I put together of some of the highlights:
