I was invited to attend the opening night of Dr. Suess’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical at the Dr. Phillips Center.

Cindy Lou Who, who? Spoiler alert: the Grinch stole the show … but you would have probably guessed that. This holiday favorite was attended by many adults. Maybe it was because of the 7:30 p.m. showing. (Families should purchase tickets for the daytime shows available this Saturday and Sunday.) Or, maybe it’s because this is a fantastic production that entertains adults–even more so than kids.
I brought my 3.75 year old as my date and had to keep her engaged in conversation on the car ride to downtown so she wouldn’t fall asleep. She’s not yet familiar with the story of “The Grinch” so I gave her a little overview on the way. I think most of The Musical was over her head. So, I would save this performance for a grade schooler who has already maybe seen the film or read the book. However, I enjoyed it thoroughly and was laughing (very loudly) out loud with most of the other adults in the Walt Disney Theater.
The Grinch has some very funny comedic moments. He was interacting with the audience much like a stand-up comic. I appreciated the opportunities for audience participation: such as a sing-along, helping the Grinch say “Merry Christmas” to Cindy Lou and, at one point, it (faux) snowed in the theater.
PLAY Tip: Grab a Suess-style beverage on your way into the theater. The Grinchy Sour for parents and a Cindy Lou Who for kids. Love these little details.
Chat Backs: If you have night owls in your crew, you can stay after the 7:30 p.m. show on December 9, to meet the cast members. Interested participants should re-enter the house at Orchestra Level following the performance.
